DescriptionJULIA Gillard is being urged by senior Labor figures to sack Kevin Rudd as some Labor MPs believe a leadership ballot could happen as early as next week.
As Labor's leadership soap opera intensified, senior ALP figures told the Herald Sun the "cat-and-mouse game" could not continue and Ms Gillard needed to either sack Mr Rudd or call a party-room ballot.

"It can't keep going on like this. Sacking him can strengthen her if she handles it properly," said one senior ALP figure.

But Mr Rudd's supporters claimed momentum for him to return to the leadership was growing because Ms Gillard was not trusted by voters.

They said Mr Rudd's sales pitch would be that he had learnt from his mistakes and everyone deserved "a second chance".
