Description | State Sen. Steve Lathrop of Omaha said Monday he won't enter the 2012 Democratic Senate race, but he may seek the governorship in 2014.
"I have a greater interest in the issues here in Nebraska," Lathrop said during a morning interview at the Capitol before issuing a news release taking his name out of consideration for a Senate bid.
With three years ahead of him in his final term as a state senator, Lathrop said, he has unfinished business on his plate and a commitment to the voters who re-elected him in 2010.
"I'm seriously looking at the governor race in 2014," Lathrop said. "It's a better fit."
He said he plans to be heavily engaged in decisions this year to reform child welfare services and provide continued legislative oversight to assure that essential services are available to Nebraskans with developmental disabilities.
And, he said, he wants to "make sure that if there are tax cuts, they will be fair."
