DescriptionStamford Mayor Dannel Malloy is expected to set up a committee to prepare for a possible run for governor in 2006, The Advocate of Stamford reported.

The 48-year-old Democrat planned to announce the forming of the exploratory committee Tuesday, the newspaper reported, citing sources it did not identify. He is expected to say that he is filing paperwork with the secretary of the state's office to establish the panel.

Malloy declined to comment on the committee. He has said that he is seriously considering a run for governor.

Establishing the committee would allow Malloy to begin raising money for the race - funds that may be shifted to a campaign for other political offices should he change his mind.

George Jepsen, chairman of the state Democratic Party, said Malloy would make an excellent candidate.

"He's got real strengths," said Jepsen, a Stamford resident who ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 2002. "He can raise money. He's very articulate, and he presents himself extremely well."

One of the obstacles Malloy will face is that he's from southwestern Connecticut and not terribly well-known in the rest of the state, Jepsen said.

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and New Haven Mayor John DeStefano are also considering running for the state's highest executive post.
