Gov. Mike Easley demonstrated the power of incumbency in fund-raising reports made available Monday that show him with $2.5 million in the bank to finance his re-election bid this year -- more than his six Republican competitors combined.
During the six-month period ending Dec. 31, Easley, a Democrat, collected $1.7 million from political supporters representing every major industry in North Carolina. Among the givers: bankers, real estate agents, lawyers, drug makers, tobacco growers, hog farmers, doctors, other politicians and lots of state workers.
The numbers are no surprise to Bob Hall, research director of Democracy North Carolina, an organization that promotes campaign-finance reform. Hall thinks Easley is likely to carry a financial advantage throughout the year. |
