Description | For instance, HB 1581 would require police to obtain a warrant before being able to arrest an abuser, whereas at present, police can arrest an attacker upon the observation of evidence of the abuse. Such a law would keep police from intervening when a woman or a child needs immediate protection from abuse. The second bill, HB 1608, would prohibit judges from ordering the arrest of individuals who violate domestic violence restraining orders. To make matters worse, in their perennial need to suck up to the gun fetishists of the NRA, the GOP has also included langauge in the bill that would prevent judges from blocking dangerous abusers from buying firearms. It would even stop them from forcing abusers to surrender the weapons they already have. Think about that: the GOP has declared that these men (and it is mostly men) should still be able to carry a gun. Men who have demonstrated a lack of self control so profound that they mercilessly beat women and children. |
