DescriptionFormer South Dakota Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin announced Saturday that she will not seek office in 2012.

Herseth Sandlin had been a top choice among national Democrats to try to reclaim the seat she lost in 2010 to Rep. Kristi Noem.

"This has been an extraordinarily difficult decision," she wrote on her Facebook account. "My desire to serve South Dakota has always been strong, and I will always give serious consideration to opportunities to serve again, but I will not be a candidate for office in 2012."

She added that she has enjoyed being a mom "first and foremost."

Herseth Sandlin won the seat in a special election in 2004 after losing in a strong showing to Bill Janklow in 2002. She went on to win again in the 2004, and won convincingly in 2006 and 2008.

She was among the Democratic victims who lost seats in the 2010 election that saw Republicans win a majority in the House.

She was thought to be the Democrats' best chance at reclaiming the seat. So far, two other Democrats, Minnehaha County Commissioner Jeff Barth, and former staffer to Sen. Tim Johnson, Matt Varilek, have announced their intentions to challenge Noem.
