DescriptionDemocratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean predicted on Monday he could win New Mexico despite having all but given up hope of a victory in any of the seven states that hold nominating contests on Tuesday.

The former Vermont governor, who is looking down the road to Michigan, Washington State, Maine and Wisconsin to provide a lifeline for his foundering White House bid, also said he wanted to win 15 percent when South Carolina votes in the next 24 hours.

In a satellite television interview from Santa Fe, Dean told WCIB in Charleston, "You've seen quite a lot of me in South Carolina," and that "what I want in South Carolina if I can get it is 15 percent of the vote."

"We've certainly not given up on South Carolina," he added, despite a couple of perfunctory campaign appearances there on Friday. Dean is not advertising in South Carolina or any of the other six states that vote on Tuesday.

On his chances in New Mexico, Dean told a rally in Santa Fe, "This is a state we can win tomorrow. Our object is to get delegates in every state but our object in New Mexico is to win."

Dean also renewed his criticism of front-runner John Kerry's financial ties to special interests.

"Everybody is busy bashing special interests," he said. "The only special interest I have is you. The only person I'm going to owe when I get to Washington is you."
