DescriptionThe state Department of Transportation will tear down the Route 33 bridge that began to crumble last week. Officials said sinkholes have made it impossible to repair and dangerous to work on.

PennDOT pulled its workers off the project Friday after new sinkholes opened, dropping the bridge an additional 8 inches. It had sunk 6 inches when it was closed Jan. 24. Officials hope to have a new bridge constructed by the end of July.

An emergency proclamation from Gov. Ed Rendell, combined with the promise of federal funding from U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., will allow PennDOT to forgo the bidding process and begin work as soon as possible. But no one knows how much money the state will get or when demolition will begin
