Description | NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu is getting a chance to confront one of the city's biggest problems head-on as he serves on a jury hearing a murder case.
Landrieu was part of a jury pool that reported to the state district courthouse in New Orleans on Monday. The Times-Picayune reports that he was selected for a 12-person jury hearing the case against 29-year-old Gerald Nickles. Nickles was charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a man during a 2007 armed robbery.
Landrieu has launched several initiatives to fight violent crime in the city but so far has been unable to reverse the murder rate. The number of people killed in the city this year already has surpassed last year's total. |
