Description | Former Mississippi Gov. Bill Waller Sr. died Wednesday. The 85-year-old lawyer and politician was admitted last night to St. Dominic Hospital, where he died at 12:41 p.m., his office said Wednesday.
Waller was elected governor in 1971, defeating Charles Evers, who ran as an independent. Waller won 77 percent of the vote and served as governor from 1972 to 1976. In those days, governors could only serve one term.
In 1973, he won praise for cutting off funding for the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission, the state segregationist spy agency. He was best known for prosecuting Byron De La Beckwith for the 1963 assassination of NAACP leader Medgar Evers. |
