Description | It's not just Republicans who are scrambling after House Speaker Steve Tilley's surprise departure from the lieutenant governor's race.
Democrats are now viewing the contest with renewed optimism, and adjusting accordingly.
State Party Chairwoman Susan Montee, who entered the race earlier this year only after her efforts to recruit a candidate to take on Tilley fizzled, is taking steps to leave the helm of the party to focus on her campaign.
It's a move she likely would have had to make anyway, but the timing — she announced on Friday that "she has finalized plans with party leadership for the election of a new chair" — suggests she's acting swiftly in order to discourage any potential primary challengers who may like their odds now that the well-funded Tilley is out of the picture.
Party leaders have apparently reached a consensus on who will replace Montee as chair: Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders, who, at one time, was considered Gov. Jay Nixon's choice to run for the state's No. 2. |
