DescriptionDEPUTY Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta has for the first time categorically stated that he will join the race to succeed President Kibaki in 2012.

"Nitarudi kuomba kura zenu kwa sababu nitakuwa kwa kinyang'anyiro cha mwaka ujao. (I will come back to seek your votes as I will be in the presidential race next year)," said Uhuru while he addressed Narok leaders at the season's hotel. He did not expound more on his bid but said he will speak more when he returns for a political rally later.

Uhuru was speaking in Narok yesterday when he visited the model Nkareta secondary school that has received Sh22 million as part of the economic stimulus programme that Uhuru included in his 2009-2010 budget. Using the money the school has created a centre of excellence with classrooms, dormitory, lab and staff houses.

Uhuru now joins Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Gichugu MP Martha Karua, Foreign Affairs minister Moses Wetangula, Gachoka MP Mutava Musyimi and Eldoret MP William Ruto as confirmed presidential contenders. Prime Minister Raila Odinga is also expected to be a candidate but has not yet officially confirmed.

Last week the latest opinion poll by Ipso Synovate said the Gatundu South MP was closing the gap on Prime Minister Raila Odinga as the preferred presidential candidate with 24 per cent compared to 34 per cent. On the same day the International Criminal Court stated that suspects charged with crimes against humanity are still free to run for political office since the ICC process and Kenya's political system are independent of each other.
