DescriptionWith the threat of insolvency looming over the U.S. Postal Service, two-thirds of Americans say that they would settle for five days of mail delivery a week, a new survey shows.

In fact, 68 percent of Americans would accept just five days of postal service a week, according to a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll. Congress mandated a six-day delivery schedule in 1983.

Earlier this year, Postmaster General Patrick Donahue told USA Today that the U.S. Postal Service would probably have to limit mail delivery to just three days a week within the next 15 years. Only 21 percent of respondents to the poll said they would tolerate this delivery schedule.

If further dropped to only one day of delivery a week, only 5 percent would be satisfied with the U.S. Postal Service’s schedule.

The survey shows that Americans still have use for a physical postal service. Only 4 percent said that they would eliminate postal service altogether and use email.
