DescriptionCory Booker is back. Not that he really went away to begin with.

The former Newark councilman -- who came within 3,500 votes of ousting Mayor Sharpe James last year -- held a fundraiser tonight at the Mediterranean Manor in the city's East Ward for his next campaign: a 2006 rematch with James.

Booker told about 350 supporters -- many seated at tables with red, white and blue balloons emblazoned with "Booker 2006" -- that he's just as concerned about the Newark's direction now as he was a year ago. He also mocked some of his critics from last year who suggested Booker would leave the city if he lost.

"Mr. Smith ain't going to Washington!" Booker proclaimed. "He's staying right here with his family in Newark."

Booker's campaign estimated that the $250-a-head fundraiser brought in $100,000 for "Booker Team '06." Campaign manager Pablo Fonseca said that Booker has no outstanding debts from his '02 race and that the campaign hopes to bring in over $5 million between now and the '06 election.

With the election more than three years away, some might question Booker's early start. But in his ten-minute remarks to the crowd, he suggested that James himself hadn't let go of last year's campaign, and that the mayor had acted in "retaliation" against citizens who had backed Booker.
