Description | Former state Rep. Mike Boland is dropping out of the Democratic primary in Illinois' 17th district and will pursue a challenge against state Sen. Mike Jacobs.
The state Senate race would pit two rival families against one another. And it would also pare the already lengthy slate of Democrats seeking to unseat U.S. Rep. Bobby Schilling, R-Ill.
Boland, who is from East Moline, had already signaled the possibility he would switch races. And he's scheduled a news conference for Thursday to explain his reasons.
In an interview with the Quad-City Times today, Boland said the primary reason for dropping out of the congressional race is because he didn't want to be away from his 10-year-old grandson.
"You could never get back those years," he said.
Boland is one of six people who have been competing for the Democratic nomination, and his exit from the race comes just a few days before third quarter financial reports are due to the Federal Election Commission.
