DescriptionOregon Legislative leaders booted Rep. Mike Schaufler from a legislative committee Friday and stripped him of his prized co-chairmanship after reviewing allegations that the Happy Valley Democrat groped a woman's breast at an organized labor event nearly two weeks ago.

The punishment was ordered by House Co-speakers Arnie Roblan and Bruce Hanna, who have authority to appoint and remove committee chairs in the evenly divided chamber. Roblan issued a statement making it clear the action was taken in response to the incident on Monday, Sept. 26.

"After personally investigating the incident, including having several conversations with those involved, I have determined that the strongest course of action available to me is to remove Rep. Schaufler as both chair and as a member of the House Business and Labor Committee," Roblan said. "I am taking this action immediately to show how seriously I view this incident."

The House adopted rules against sexual harassment by members and staff in 1993, along with a stiff set of sanctions that include censure and expulsion. But the rules apply only to harassment against other House members or employees. The woman involved in the incident works for the Bureau of Labor and Industries.
