Description | COLUMBUS -- Ohio's 2012 presidential primary has been reset to March 6, under language included in a congressional redistricting plan passed by the Ohio House and Senate Wednesday.
The move reverses lawmakers' course in earlier legislation, which is subject to a potential voter referendum next year, and stalls a separate bill passed by the Ohio House last week.
Sen. Keith Faber, a Republican from Celina, said legislation changing the primary date to May would not take effect until after a December filing deadline, potentially causing too much confusion for candidates and elections officials.
"There is no practical way, when the House (Democrats) went back on their deal for an emergency clause to move the primary, to move the primary in a way to where it will be in place before Dec. 7," said Faber, who serves as chairman of the committee considering legislation on the issue. "So that means we're going to have a March primary." |
