DescriptionThe chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party said today his state won't share its presidential primary date with Arizona on Feb. 28. He vowed to reschedule to ensure the Palmetto State remains first in the South.

Chad Connelly, the South Carolina chairman, told USA TODAY he has the flexibility to pick a date that ensures his state will remain one of the first four states to vet a presidential candidate as Republican National Committee rules dictate.

"We're going to be first in the South and we're not going to share our date with anybody -- especially with a state that breaks the rules, " Connelly said in a telephone interview.

He declined to specify a date, saying he'll keep that close to him until the RNC's Oct. 1 deadline for setting the primary calendar.
