DescriptionMADISON, Wis. -- U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin of Madison will run for Senate in 2012, she announced to supporters Tuesday morning in a video message. In the email sent to supporters of her campaign, Baldwin said standing up for the middle class is her top priority, and is ready to face the challenge head on.

Baldwin had widely been expressing her interest in the seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl. Kohl announced in May that he would not seek a fifth term in the Senate, and Baldwin was quick to say she'd consider her options. The Madison Democrat was first elected to Congress in 1999 to represent the 2nd Congressional District, and has also served in the Wisconsin State Assembly, Dane County Board and Madison Common Council. Baldwin was both the first woman to represent Wisconsin in the House of Representatives, and the first openly-gay member of Congress.

Other Democrats that have expressed possible interest in running for the seat include Wisconsin Rep. Ron Kind of La Crosse and former Rep. Steve Kagen of Appleton. Former Sen. Russ Feingold announced in August he was not interested in running for re-election.
