Description | State Rep. Mike Fortner, R-West Chicago, issued the following press release:
In Columbus, Ohio, the League of Women Voters of Ohio Education Fund, the Midwest Democracy Network and Ohio Citizen Action released the winning legislative maps from the Ohio Redistricting Competition today. Illinois State Representative Mike Fortner’s map was declared the first place winner. His map will be submitted to the Ohio Apprortionment board as part of public hearings across the State of Ohio.
“This contest in Ohio could provide a fair, non-partisan process for redistricting,” said Fortner. “In 2009, I offered a constitutional amendment to bring this process to Illinois. My amendment received a hearing in the Senate, but unfortunately was never allowed a hearing in the House.”
Ohio hosts a competition that allows private citizens the opportunity to draw district lines for the Ohio House and Senate. Participants are required to design districts which comply with all federal and state legal requirements. The maps are then scored based on objective nonpartisan criteria using mathematical formulas to the degree to which the districts respect county boundaries, are compact, are competitive and fair to both political parties.
“The process used in Ohio addresses the concerns that the Illinois League of Women Voters have with our redistricting process,” said Fortner. “It can provide the safeguards against use of partisan data for political ends and create a truly open process for redistricting.”
