Description | U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D-Detroit), dean of the Congressional Black Caucus, will face a primary challenge from Sen. Bert Johnson (D-Highland Park), MIRS reports.
Conyers, who has served 23 terms, has been handed almost an entirely new 14th District to run in, thanks to redistricting maps that passed the Legislature last month.
Johnson, who is almost 50 years younger than Conyers, is in his first Senate term. He served two terms in the House. Johnson didn't hesitate to criticize Conyers, who has so far escaped the taint of his wife, former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers, being convicted on federal bribery charges.
"This is really about understanding that the 14th Congressional District has not had the kind of support I think it deserves within the last 10 years or so, I would say," Johnson told MIRS. |
