DescriptionWhile not yet officially jumping into the 2012 congressional race, ND State Treasurer Kelly Schmidt shared that she has in fact been encouraged “many times by several different folks” – including GOP kingmaker Senator Jim DeMint – to consider challenging Congressman Rick Berg for the NDGOP Senate nomination.

Reluctant to come out and compare herself to Berg, Schmidt did tell interviewer Scott Hennen today that she does consider herself “a very conservative woman.”

“I want to make sure that if I do this, I do this for all of the right reasons,” said Schmidt, explaining that she is still in an exploratory phase and considering her 2012 options. “I want to make sure that if I am the person to run for the US House or the US Senate or the ND Treasurer…I want to make sure that wherever I decide to put my hat in is where I believe I can best use my talents and my abilities to serve North Dakotans.”

Schmidt does not believe that anyone is entitled to the NDGOP nomination. “This is an open seat,” said Schmidt. “We need to go through a process, and I believe that North Dakotans should have an opportunity and a choice to vet that process.”
