Description | If Gov. John Lynch declines to run for a fifth term in 2012, former Senate Majority Leader Maggie Hassan said she might run for governor.
Hassan, an Exeter Democrat who served three terms in the state Senate, told the Exeter News-Letter Thursday she has had meetings and discussions about a potential run. The participants have included people encouraging her to run and talks with those whose advice she welcomes.
"One of reasons I'm having discussions now is that I want to make the decision carefully," she said. "I need to make sure that my family and I are ready to give it our all."
Whether Lynch runs again or not remains an open question. When asked about Lynch's re-election plans, his spokesperson Colin Manning said "the governor is focused on doing his job as governor right now."
Hassan, who has lived more than two decades in the state, has no wish for a primary battle."Obviously that's the first step in the road," Hassan said about Lynch and his decision to run again. "He has served us well. I have enormous respect for him and would support any decision he makes."
She had no comment on whether she has talked to Lynch about her future plans.
Former Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand said "it's hard to imagine any scenario in which jobs and the economy aren't at the top of voters' agenda in 2012. The popular Lynch would have a 'commanding advantage' if he chooses to run to run again. |
