Description"The daughter of former Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar has asked a local judge to declare her father legally dead.

Lara Gricar, who is trustee of her father’s estate, filed a petition with Centre County President Judge David E. Grine on Thursday asking for an order declaring the death of Ray Gricar.

Gricar disappeared April 15, 2005, after taking a day off from his job as district attorney. That morning, he called his girlfriend, Patty Fornicola, to inform her he was going for a drive through Brush Valley. His car was found in Lewisburg the next day, but Gricar has not been seen or heard from since.

Grine has scheduled a hearing on the petition for 2 p.m. July 25 in Centre County court.

The petition cites the “diligent inquiry” law enforcement has made into Gricar’s disappearance and the desire for “closure” for Lara Gricar, Fornicola, and the rest of Gricar’s family.

“This reflects a recognition by the family that given the length of time and the investigative work that has already gone on, that it’s likely that Mr. Gricar is deceased and it’s time to move on and close up his affairs and his estate,” said Amos Goodall, the attorney representing Lara Gricar.

Pennsylvania law allows for the presumption of death of a missing person after seven years of unexplained absence. A judge can also declare a missing person dead in advance of the seven-year statute if presented with a substantive amount of facts and circumstances — the path Goodall is pursuing."
