Description | The House Ethics Committee announced late Friday that it is investigating Rep. Jean Schmidt, who has been accused of accepting thousands of dollars in free legal services from a Turkish-American group.
The announcement does not say what Schmidt is being investigated for, nor does it mean the committee has found any wrongdoing.
If a formal investigation finds wrongdoing, Schmidt could face reprimand, censure or expulsion. If the office decides to dismiss the case, however, it could do so without ever saying anything publicly.
Schmidt, speaking publicly for the first time on this matter, told the Enquirer that she hasn’t received a bill for the legal services in question. She said she has been waiting for more than a year for guidance from the ethics committee on the proper procedure to pay the bill. She maintained that she has done nothing wrong. |
