DescriptionWellford Mayor Sallie Peake's plans to open a history museum just prior to the June election have been scuttled by questions from county building officials and a state investigation into alleged funding irregularities.

Peake said multiple times during a phone interview that the city was not using taxpayer funds to renovate a former post office into a history museum, saying Hospitality Tax funds — a tax collected on all prepared food in the city — aren't considered taxpayer money.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division spokeswoman Kathryn Richardson confirmed the agency is investigating allegations of financial irregularities in Wellford.

Peake said she didn't know how much had been spent to the museum — a small building on Main Street — but a new roof, electrical work and sheetrock had been installed.

“I don't write the checks so I don't know how much has been spent,” Peake said, referring a reporter to Town Clerk Lynne Lingo.
