DescriptionMoney from the illegal sale of a military surplus tractor by the Wellford City Council is going to fund an empty museum on Main Street, documents show.

Almost all of the $60,000 from the sale of the tractor has been pumped into the museum, a project led by Mayor Sallie Peake.

In March, the city council signed a resolution to sell the 2002 John Deere tractor, an item the city acquired for free through South Carolina’s 1033 Surplus Program.

Documents obtained through the S.C. Freedom of Information Act show the tractor was sold in March to a company in Woodruff.

Shortly after the sale, an inspector from the state’s 1033 program was told the tractor had been sold, and when an inventory was taken, the inspector realized the tractor was gone.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was notified, and an investigation was launched into “financial irregularities” within the City of Wellford.
