Description | "Rep. Anthony Weiner said he couldn't say "with certitude" whether he was the person depicted in a lewd photo sent from his Twitter account, adding new details to a controversy that has ensnared the New York Democrat.
Mr. Weiner, who is a frequent combatant on cable news shows, used television interviews Wednesday in an attempt to explain the photo of a man's underwear-clad crotch sent from his Twitter account on Friday night to a young woman in Seattle. The photo was sent in such a way that all of the tens of thousands of Mr. Weiner's Twitter followers could see it. Mr. Weiner has said he knew the woman, a 21-year-old college student, only as one of his Twitter followers.
The existence of the tweet and the photo was first reported Saturday by a website run by conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart.
On Wednesday, Mr. Weiner said he didn't send the photograph. But Mr. Weiner told NBC he couldn't say "with certitude" whether the person in the photograph was him, and said he had hired a private security firm to determine what happened.
Mr. Weiner's first response to the weekend disclosure was to say that his Twitter account had been hacked. On Tuesday, Mr. Weiner was confronted by reporters at the Capitol and declined to give specific answers, including whether the photo was of him. At one point, the congressman grew irate and called a CNN producer a "jackass."
