DescriptionPresident Barack Obama's choice to lead the Commerce Department is no stranger to electric utilities and environmentalists.

John Bryson, whom Obama nominated on Tuesday, would bring more than three decades of experience working on energy issues to a Cabinet post at the center of the nation's business agenda.

Most of Bryson's career has been in California, where he opened up the West Coast operations of the Natural Resources Defense Council — an organization he helped found — and then shifted into public office as a water and public utility commissioner during Gov. Jerry Brown's first stint in Sacramento.

Bryson also ran the power conglomerate Edison International as it weathered the 2000-03 California energy crisis. Those troubles shook the state on almost every level, forcing competitor PG&E into bankruptcy and helping end the political career of then-Gov. Gray Davis.

"There were lots of warnings, and John was one of the ones making them before the situation happened," said Tom Kuhn, president of the Edison Electric Institute, the leading trade group for investor-owned utilities. "He led them through it. He led them out of it. And he led them out of a situation where the company got through the major financial hit it took."
