DescriptionASHEVILLE — Councilman Cecil Bothwell, who last month announced a bid to seek Western North Carolina’s congressional seat as an independent, now says he’ll challenge U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler in the Democratic primary.

Bothwell said he decided on the change of course on the advice of friends and supporters.

"I originally believed that the best way to address issues too long ignored and to challenge the corporate power over the national parties was to run as an independent," he said. "But I've heard from hundreds of people, from WNC to Washington, DC, who believe the most likely path to success is up the middle instead of trying for an end-run.”

Had Bothwell run as an independent, he would have had to mount a petition drive to get his name on the 2012 general election ballot. State law requires gathering the signatures of the number of voters equal to 4 percent of the total number of registered voters in the 11th District.

Shuler, now serving his third term in the House, faced a primary challenger in the 2010 race. While Aixa Wilson beat Shuler in Buncombe County, the incumbent easily won the primary.
