Description | BALTIMORE -- The number of measles cases in the United States has exploded in recent months, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting the largest outbreak of the disease in 15 years.
There are currently no reported cases in Maryland, but the CDC said overseas visits made by unvaccinated travelers have contributed to an increase in numbers nationwide.
In the past four months, 118 cases of measles have been reported throughout the U.S., which is nearly double the number of cases reported in all of 2010.
Dr. Anne Bailowitz, the assistant commissioner of clinical services for the Baltimore Health Department, said the measles situation in Europe and other areas overseas has reached epidemic levels. |
