DescriptionAnother name has emerged as a possible challenger to 8th District Rep. Chip Cravaack in 2012: Duluth City Council Member Jeff Anderson.

Republican Cravaack upset longtime Democratic Congressman Jim Oberstar last year, and the DFL party has been scrambling to find the right candidate to try to win back the seat.

Anderson, an Ely native, told the Ely Echo: "I am feeling positive about a run in 2012, but it's a big decision."

The paper said:

The last several months, Anderson has meet with party activists, party unit chairs across the spacious Eighth District, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and even former U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar.

The meetings have been encouraging, Anderson said, enough so that he's likely to file paperwork that would allow him to begin fundraising for an election bid.

Anderson said his ability to raise money for what's certain to be an expensive campaign is one of many factors that will weigh heavily in his decision.

Anderson was elected to the Duluth council in 2007 and has worked on many DFL campaigns. He's a radio ad exec in Dululth, and said Cravaack is a good candidate:

"I know Congressman Cravaack will not be easy to beat. A Democrat will have to work hard and start early ... We need a strong Democrat to run in 2012, and now we'll be seeing who will put in the work and put in the time and create the grassroots effort and raise money."

Former Congressman Rick Nolan recently said he might be interested in running, too. Other names mentioned include Tarryl Clark and Ryan Winkler.
