Description | Iowa’s five-member redistricting commission has unanimously advised lawmakers to accept the first proposal that will redraw Iowa’s political boundaries.
The maps, but together by the nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency, outline proposed boundaries for both congressional and general assembly officials based upon new population counts.
One of the key responsibilities of the commission’s members — two appointed by Democrats, two by Republicans and one by the four first commissioners — is to set and hold public meetings across the state to gather public input. The commission’s recommendations are partly based upon public comment.
The House, Senate or governor could reject the initial proposal and call for a second map or even third map.
The third try can be amended to adopt the first or second maps or even a variation of the plans. However, it must pass the legislature by Sept. 1 or it will be left for the Iowa Supreme Court to decide. |
