DescriptionThe proposed new map pits Republican U.S. Reps. Tom Latham of Ames and Steve King of Kiron together in the new 4th Congressional District in northwestern and north central Iowa.

King on Thursday told IowaPolitics.com that he still had not explored his options in regards to moving or running against Latham. He said about half of the counties in the new 4th District are in his current 5th Congressional District, while about half are from Latham's current district.

"I plan to be on the ballot in 2012," King said. "I need to have a conversation with Tom Latham."

King noted that Latham has represented lot of northwest Iowa in his previous district, the old 5th Congressional District, which included 30 counties in northwest Iowa. When asked why he hadn't yet spoken with Latham, he noted his efforts to stop funding to federal health care reform as a federal government shutdown looms.

"I'm just so busy trying to undo Obamacare," King said. "I've put on the back burner something that has so many implications for the longer-term future because of the urgency of what's going on here."

Des Moines would be part of the newly drawn 3rd Congressional District. At the moment, U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell, a Des Moines Democrat, would have no opponent in that district which includes southwest Iowa. However, King said 12 of those 16 counties are part of his current western Iowa district.

In northeast Iowa, the map currently has Democratic U.S. Reps. Bruce Braley of Waterloo and Dave Loebsack of Mount Vernon together in the new 1st District, although Loebsack has indicated that he would move to the 2nd District in southeast Iowa.
