DescriptionVALLEY GOP CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE CLAIMS WHITE HOUSE TRIED TO STOP HIM RUNNING AGAINST BECKY ARMENDARIZ KLEIN

Capener says local Republicans upset with heavy hand of party machine
An Anglo Republican from the South Texas says he got a call from a person claiming to be from the White House Friday evening asking him to pull out of a congressional race in favor of a Hispanic opponent.

Former pastoral minister Regner A. Capener, from Mission, said the person, who called immediately following the congressional filing deadline, identified himself as Ralph Keaney and said he was representing the White House.

He said Keaney asked him to step aside so that former Public Utilities Commission chair Becky Armendariz Klein could have a free ride through the Republican primary for Congressional District 25, and that Keaney said only Klein could beat U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin) in the general election.

Capener also said the "fellow" also hinted that Republican National Committee money would flow more freely to Klein if he were not in the race. Capener said he told Keaney he would not back down. He said the "heavy-handed" approach of the party machine had "outraged" local Hidalgo County Republican leaders
