DescriptionLook out, "King Prog." Here comes Tom Salmon.

Taking aim on popular U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, Vermont's state auditor says he'll step down when his term ends and may challenge the filibustering independent, whose early supporters helped found Vermont's Progressive Party.

"I have enjoyed my service to the state but will not seek re-election as state auditor," he said on his Facebook page Thursday night. "It had been an honor to serve with such a talented team at the SAO (State Auditor's Office). Thank you all."

In an interview Friday, the 47-year-old Republican said he hasn't made up his mind about a U.S. Senate run but that he hasn't ruled it out, either.

"It's time to move on for another challenge, whether it's in politics or out of politics," he said.

By any measure, Sanders may be tough to beat.
