Description | unanimous Federal Court of Appeal has come down squarely against the Conservative Party of Canada's election advertising scheme that transferred money “in and out” of national and local campaigns to let the party exceed its national spending limit.
The ruling strikes down a lower court decision in a civil lawsuit. The suit was launched as a test by two of 67 Conservative candidates in the 2005-06 election who were refused rebates for local advertising expenses for ads that were designed, bought and aired under the direction of the national campaign office.
Liberal and NDP critics immediately said the civil ruling guts the Conservative Party's defence that it is nothing but an “administrative dispute” — a line used again in the Commons Tuesday by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. |
