DescriptionRep. David Wu revealed late Tuesday that he accepted painkiller pills from a campaign donor last October.

“The donor offered me an alternative painkiller, and I took two tablets. This was the only time that this has ever happened,” the Oregon Democrat wrote to The Oregonian. “I recognize that my action showed poor judgment at the time, and I sincerely regret having put my staff in a difficult position.”

An anonymous campaign staffer told the paper that the painkiller was oxycodone, an opioid sometimes sold under the name Oxycontin.

Wu behaved erratically throughout the fall, acting oddly at several public events and sending staffers photos of himself in a tiger costume and other e-mail messages written in the voices of his children. Wu disclosed in one October meeting with Democrats that he stopped drinking on July 1.
