DescriptionRedondo Beach City Attorney Mike Webb announced Thursday he is entering the special election for California’s 36th district.

Webb, described by Republican strategists as a strong fundraiser, has been Redondo’s city attorney since 2005 and served as city prosecutor from 1994 to 2005.

“I am not a career politician looking for a new job because of term limits," he said in a statement. "While I am happy serving the people of Redondo Beach, now is the time for me to step up and help solve the serious issues facing our nation and our congressional district."

The Republican joins two high-profile Democrats already in the race: Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn and California Secretary of State Debra Bowen.

The special election will be the first Congressional race held under California’s new all-party primary, in which the top two finishers advance to the general election, regardless of party.

Rep. Jane Harman (D) is vacating the seat Feb. 28 — two weeks later than originally scheduled. The timing allows Gov. Jerry Brown to consolidate the special with a statewide election on taxes he has called for June.

The special primary would take place eight weeks before the June election.
