DescriptionMike Rawlings, former Pizza Hut chief executive and the city's Park Board president, will run for mayor.

Rawlings came to City Hall this morning to file a campaign treasurer report, naming Joe Haggar Jr. to the post.

"The real issue is, as I'm looking at the city of Dallas, we've had a fabulous history. But for us to be a great city in the 21st century, we are going to have to have special leadership. As I look at my skill set and what I think the city needs, there seems to be a match," Rawlings said.

He said the mayor needs to be visionary and a "team builder", bringing all the city council together.

"We've got to be able to execute the basics and be sure neighborhoods are strong and our crime continues to drop," he said.

Rawlings declined to detail specific policies or goals at this point, saying that will come.

Monday is the first day candidates can file to run for city council.

Rawlings, who has also served as Dallas' homeless czar, had said he was considering getting into the race. Today's announcement heats up a mayoral race that already includes former police chief David Kunkle and council member Ron Natinsky.

Rawlings may lack the name recognition of Kunkle and the City Hall experience of Natinsky.

But he has deep connections to the city's business community and has forged relationships in other parts of Dallas through his work as homeless czar and on the park board

Rawlings will have to resign from the park board to run for mayor. But when Mayor Tom Leppert tapped him for the job, it led to widespread speculation that the mayor saw Rawlings as a good fit to replace him.

Leppert has made no endorsement in the race and his longtime political consultant, Carol Reed, is working with Natinsky.
