Description | Washington -- William F. Walsh, the former Syracuse mayor and member of Congress who was the patriarch of a local political dynasty, died this morning at his home in Marcellus, according to his family. He was 98.
Walsh, a Republican, was elected to the first of two terms as Syracuse’s mayor in 1961, giving rise to a career and a family name that would dominate Central New York politics for a half century.
After gaining national prominence as vice president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Walsh ran for Congress. He represented the Syracuse area in the House of Representatives over three terms from 1973 to 1979. |
