DescriptionCalifornia U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein slammed the national debt, saying Capitol Hill must address the issue in the near future.

Both Ms. Feinstein and U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer voted in favor of the bill, but Ms. Feinstein warned of deep cuts ahead in an impassioned speech just before the floor was cleared.

The tax package, which is expected to add nearly $1 trillion to the national debt, remains a divisive issue within the Democratic Party. House Democrats continue to say they will attempt to modify the measure with amendments.

Ms. Feinstein said an extension of unemployment benefits and a reduction in payroll taxes offset her opposition to proposed tax cuts and the estate tax.
