DescriptionTim Murray, the lieutenant governor of Massachusetts, was driving through Worcester with his wife and two children last night when he spotted smoke coming from a parked minivan. Immediately, he pulled over and sprang into action.

According to the Boston Globe, Murray was calling 911 when he heard someone shout that children were inside the burning vehicle. He ran to the minivan, pulled the children out and took them to their grandmother, who was standing nearby.

The unidentified woman, who was driving the minivan before the left front tire burst into flames, nearly attacked Murray during the rescue attempt.

"She told me 'I didn't know if you were trying to take the kids or take the car. I was about to punch you,'" Murray said in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. Murray then downplayed his heroic role, saying he did "pretty much what anyone else would have done if they had come upon it."

Emergency personnel soon arrived on the scene and extinguished the flames, the Associated Press reported.

This is the second time Murray has been hailed for assisting people in need. In April 2009, he helped a woman out of her car after she suffered a medical emergency on the interstate and crashed into three vehicles and a piece of construction equipment. He then stayed with the ailing driver until help arrived, WHDH.com reported.

Murray is a Democrat, a lawyer, and the former mayor of Worcester. He's also served on the boards of the Worcester Public Library, Worcester Historical Museum, Worcester Community Action Council, the Worcester Working Coalition for Latino Students, and Preservation Worcester. Murray is set to be inaugurated for a second term tomorrow.
