Description | Former Rep. Heather Wilson is considering a run for Senate next year, according to Roll Call. Wilson told the Washington, D.C., publication yesterday that now that her job heading Susana Martinez’s transition team has ended she can begin thinking about her future.
“I am considering running for the Senate, as well as other opportunities,” Wilson said Monday. “A number of factors go into that. Ultimately it’s a decision about what is the best use of my talents and gifts.”
It would be Wilson’s second Senate bid. In 2008, she narrowly lost to Steve Pearce in the general election; Pearce ended up losing to Tom Udall in the general election.
Politico reported that New Mexico senior Senator Jeff Bingaman was “weighing retirement” and has said that he will make a decision on whether to run early this year. Bingaman has served in the U.S. Senate since 1983.
Two Republicans have already jumped into the race. Former congressional candidate Greg Sowards announced his candidacy in December, and Alamogordo resident William S. English announced he would run against Bingaman.
