DescriptionWASHINGTON-Speaking last night on Larry King Live, former Texas Governor Ann W. Richards endorsed Governor Howard Dean for president.

"I watched the dynamics of the race all along. Howard was one that was really fired up and he was taking very strong stands. The amazing thing about Howard Dean is that he was the Governor of Vermont-elected five times-but the unbelievable thing is that he raised more money than anybody, and that he put the best organization together.

"He's an old friend, a long association when we served together as governors, and I admired what he did, and I admired particularly that he got healthcare in Vermont for everybody. That 99 percent of the children of Vermont are eligible for healthcare. That's what we ought to be having for the whole United States, and we need somebody to do it. The important thing to remember is that this country needs to give its power back to the people, and to do that, a Democrat has got to win in November.

Governor Richards is the fourteenth former governor to endorse Dean, joining Toney Anaya (NM), Cecil Andrus (ID), Bruce Babbitt (AZ), Benjamin Cayetano (HI), Jim Folsom (AL), Booth Gardner (WA), Phil Hoff (VT), Madeleine Kunin (VT), Barbara Roberts (OR), Tom Salmon (VT), David Walters (OK), John West (SC), Lowell Weicker Jr. (CT).
