DescriptionRep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) narrowly won a three-way race on Thursday to become the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee next year.

Smith was up against Reps. Silvestre Reyes of Texas and Loretta Sanchez of California. And though Reyes, outgoing chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, was rumored to be in the lead, Sanchez and Smith demolished him in Democratic Steering and Policy Committee votes Wednesday and again Thursday in a meeting of the full House Democratic Caucus.

The caucus voted on all three candidates, and Sanchez and Smith tied at 64 votes apiece, while Reyes was back at 53. Smith pulled ahead in the runoff by just 11 votes.

Smith will replace the current chairman, Missouri Rep. Ike Skelton, who has led Democrats on the committee that sets defense policies and authorizes funding for the Pentagon for a dozen years, but was defeated for re-election. Skelton is in the midst of trying to pass the committee’s major annual piece of legislation, the defense authorization bill for 2011, which is expected to come before the House for a vote Friday.
