Description | Japan Honors Military Team Headed to Iraq
An advance team of Japanese soldiers bound for Iraq was honored Friday in a ceremony marking the beginning of Japan's biggest and most dangerous overseas military mission since World War II.
Dressed in green camouflage fatigues, the 30-member contingent and their backup team stood in formation while listening to words of encouragement from the defense minister and senior officers.
Japanese troops in Iraq will rebuild schools, restore water services and provide medical care in a region of southern Iraq. They will carry arms only for self-protection in the largest postwar deployment of Japanese troops. |
