Description | Gov.-elect John Kitzhaber and Republican rival Chris Dudley together spent more than $11 million -- or about two-thirds of all the money they raised -- on those ubiquitous television and radio commercials that blanketed the Oregon airwaves during their race for governor this year.
Dudley collected nearly $10.5 million compared to $7.4 million for Kitzhaber, proving that an edge in fundraising doesn't necessarily translate into victory. Dudley used his money advantage to buy nearly twice as many ads as Kitzhaber through much of the fall, but he narrowly lost in the end.
"Who wins on these big contested statewide races are the TV stations," said Janice Thompson, executive director of Oregon Common Cause, a campaign finance watchdog group.
"All the TV and radio stations obviously felt it was a good year for them," added Bill Johnstone, president of the Oregon Association of Broadcasters. He said the money was particularly welcome given that the overall advertising market is still soft because of the troubled economy. |
