DescriptionIllinois Democratic Rep. Melissa Bean has conceded to GOP challenger Joe Walsh, handing Republicans another victory in a race that stretched two weeks beyond Election Day.

Bean, a third-term congresswoman, phoned Walsh late Tuesday to congratulate him after final vote totals showed the Republican with a 291-vote plurality. Local election officials earlier in the day completed their tally of absentee and provisional votes in Lake, Cook and McHenry counties.

Republicans have now won 60 seats, and the party holds leads in four of the six races that remain uncalled.

Bean, a former technology consultant who first defeated former GOP Rep. Phil Crane in 2002 and again in 2004, is scheduled to hold a Wednesday morning press conference to discuss the outcome of the race.

Walsh’s victory amounts to something of an upset. After the completion of the crowded February GOP primary, the National Republican Congressional Committee openly stated its preference for ousted Walsh foes Dirk Beveridge and Maria Rodriguez. Even as the race entered its final weeks, the committee neglected to add Walsh to its list of top “Young Guns” party recruits.

Over the course of the race, Bean out-fundraised Walsh $1.9 million to $465,000.
