These maps were offered last week on The Electoral Map blog as evidence that Wisconsinites of German descent skew Republican:
I happened to be interviewing Russ Feingold not long after this post appeared, and the senator scoffed at the item, which was playfully headlined “A Sober Oktoberfest for Feingold,” alluding to the Democrat's re-election struggles.
Feingold wasn't dismissing the connection between 19th century European settlement patterns and how people vote today.(In fact, he is totally into the subject.) He just disputed the notion that German heritage correlates all that strongly with voting Republican.
“Absolutely false,” said Feingold. “Milwaukee is the most Germanic city in America and (used to be) the most left city in America … I’ll do very well in German parts of the state.”
We’ll have to wait until election day to test that. |
